The same logic applies lower down. A Salt Lake deck sees less snow than a mountain one, but it takes the same intense valley sun and freeze-thaw swing, so the material still has to be chosen for durability, not sticker price. In our experience the fastenings matter too: a hidden-fastener system rated for this climate tends to hold better than surface screws, which can work loose after enough freeze-thaw seasons.
The mistake we see most is a deck fastened to a wall whose flashing was never designed to shed mountain snowmelt. The deck outlives the wall, and the wall is where the expensive damage hides.
